Botany in Montessori

Wed, March 27 2024

This term, the children in Cycle 2 (6-9 years of age) have been examining the parts and functions of plants. They have been lovingly growing plants from seeds and there is always a lot of excitement when they arrive into the classroom in the morning to observe the growth and changes in their plants.

Responsibility of taking care of plants

Responsibility is also built up gradually in children, as they learn about the needs of their plant and the consequences of not providing them their needs. The children have also been observing plants in their environment and there is a sense of awe and wonder as they learn more about nature.

Biology lessons

Biology (botany and zoology) is another chapter that is introduced in the unfolding of the universe when presenting Cosmic Education to second plane children (6-12 years of age). It is a high interest area for children and is treated with the same principles consistent with Cosmic Education, where it’s not just an isolated subject but is looked at as if it is a part of the life process here on earth. We begin with the Second Great Story, where the Timeline of Life is used to demonstrate the fascinating process of the earth being furnished with all kinds of life.

Why we study biology in Montessori

Studying biology, for second plane children, gives them another opportunity to express their human tendencies of order, exploration, orientation and communication. The children want and need to keep exploring, as well as using their reasoning mind and imagination to discover the reasons behind facts. When biology is set into this natural perspective, and not isolated as a separate study, children start developing feelings or sentiments around plants and animals; and develop a sense of wonder and care about nature.
