The quiet corner

Quiet time in the classroom

This week in Cooinda, the teachers have introduced a new for the children. This calm space is designed for one child at a time and includes a small selection of books, a weighted blanket, and ear muffs. It offers children a place to rest, take a break, or spend time alone when they need to regulate their emotions or bodies.

Supporting children’s wellbeing is an important part of the Montessori environment. In these early years, children are developing the ability to recognise their emotions and make choices that help them feel calm and centred. Through Grace and Courtesy lessons, we model kindness, respect, and how to care for ourselves and others. The Quiet Corner extends this learning by giving children the agency to decide when they need some quiet time.

It is a pleasure to observe the children using the space thoughtfully and independently. Many children have shown great awareness in recognising when they need a short rest, and others have respected that this is a time for being alone. These early steps in self-regulation lay the foundation for emotional resilience and wellbeing as they grow.
